Belly Button Reconstruction Tattoo in Christchurch, New Zealand
Belly Button Reconstruction Tattooing is a specialised medical tattoo treatment designed to create the realistic appearance of a navel using advanced shading, highlighting and skin-tone pigment techniques.
This treatment may be suitable for clients who have lost the natural appearance of their belly button after tummy tuck surgery, abdominal surgery, C-section, hernia repair, trauma, scarring, umbilical reconstruction or congenital differences.
At Dasha Cosmetic & Medical Tattoo in Christchurch, belly button tattooing is performed with a focus on natural healed results, realistic depth, soft shadowing and a design that works with your individual anatomy and skin tone.
What is Belly Button Reconstruction Tattooing?
Belly button reconstruction tattooing, also known as navel reconstruction tattooing or 3D belly button tattooing, is a form of restorative medical tattooing.
Instead of surgically creating a new navel, pigment is placed into the skin using precise shading techniques to create the illusion of depth, shape and natural shadow. The goal is to visually recreate the appearance of a belly button in a soft, realistic and balanced way.
This treatment does not physically create a new belly button or change the structure of the skin. It creates a visual 3D effect using tattoo pigment, light, shadow and colour.
Who is this treatment suitable for?
This treatment may be suitable for clients who have:
- lost their natural belly button after tummy tuck surgery
- had changes to the navel after abdominal surgery
- had C-section or hernia repair scarring
- scarring around the belly button
a flat or distorted navel after surgery - congenital umbilical differences
- asymmetry or colour changes around the navel
- previous surgical reconstruction that needs visual refinement
A consultation is recommended to assess the skin, scar tissue, colour, texture, anatomy and whether belly button tattooing is the right option.

What can belly button tattooing improve?
Belly button reconstruction tattooing can help create the appearance of:
- natural navel depth
- soft shadowing
- a more defined belly button shape
- improved visual balance after surgery
- less visible scarring around the navel
- a more natural-looking abdominal appearance
This treatment is especially helpful when the main concern is visual appearance rather than physical structure.
How the procedure works
During the treatment, Dasha designs the shape, depth and shadow of the belly button based on your anatomy, skin tone, scar pattern and desired result.
Custom pigment colours are selected and layered using shading and highlighting techniques to create a realistic 3D navel effect. The treatment is performed gradually and conservatively to avoid a heavy or artificial-looking result.
The goal is not to create a dark tattoo mark, but to build a soft illusion of natural depth and shadow within the skin.
How many sessions are needed?
Belly button reconstruction tattooing is usually completed over 2 to 3 sessions.
The first session creates the foundation of the shape and shadow. The second session refines the colour, depth and softness after healing. A third session may be recommended if more definition, balance or adjustment is needed.
Each session usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the area and the amount of scar tissue present.
Healing and results
Immediately after treatment, the tattoo may look warmer, darker or more defined than the final healed result. Mild redness, puffiness or sensitivity may occur and usually settles within the first few days.
Light flaking may begin around 4 to 5 days after treatment. Once the skin has healed, the pigment may initially appear lighter before the colour settles and stabilises over the following weeks.
The true healed result is usually assessed after 4 to 8 weeks. At this stage, the colour, shape, depth and softness can be reviewed and refined if needed.
Related treatments
If there is scarring, texture or pigment mismatch around the belly button, other restorative treatments may be recommended before or alongside belly button tattooing.
Skin camouflage tattooing can help soften the colour contrast of white or pigmented scars around the abdomen.
Inkless Scar Revision may be recommended if the scar is raised, shiny, thick, uneven or texturally irregular before tattoo camouflage is performed.
