Dark Circles Camouflage Tattooing is a specialised cosmetic and medical tattoo treatment designed to soften the appearance of dark under-eye circles and create a naturally brighter, more refreshed look.
At Dasha Cosmetic & Medical Tattoo in Christchurch, this treatment is performed with a subtle skin-tone pigment technique, carefully customised to your natural complexion, undertone and the cause of your under-eye darkness.
What is dark circles camouflage tattooing?
Dark circles camouflage tattooing, also known as under-eye concealer tattoo or permanent concealer tattoo, is a delicate form of skin camouflage. A carefully selected pigment is implanted very superficially into the skin to visually soften blue, purple, grey or brown tones under the eyes.
The goal is not to create a heavy “makeup” effect. The result should look soft, natural and undetectable — as if the under-eye area appears slightly brighter and less tired.
Who is this treatment suitable for?
This treatment may be suitable for clients who have pigmentation-related dark circles, shadowing under the eyes, uneven skin tone, or naturally darker under-eye areas that they usually cover with concealer.
It is best suited for clients with stable skin condition and realistic expectations. A consultation is required to assess the skin, undertone, depth of darkness, skin thickness and whether camouflage tattooing is the right option for you.
What this treatment can and cannot do
Dark circles camouflage tattooing can help reduce the visible contrast between the under-eye area and the surrounding skin. It can make the area appear softer, brighter and more even.
However, it does not remove puffiness, eye bags, hollowness, deep tear troughs, loose skin, vascular conditions or structural shadows. If your darkness is mainly caused by facial anatomy, volume loss or swelling, tattoo camouflage may only provide limited improvement.
Beautiful skin tone is also strongly influenced by sleep, hydration and overall wellbeing. While camouflage tattooing can help soften pigmentation-related darkness, it cannot replace healthy skin function or fully hide the visible effects of chronic tiredness, lack of sleep or ongoing fatigue around the eyes.
How the treatment works
During the treatment, a custom pigment blend is selected to suit your skin tone, undertone and the colour of the under-eye darkness.
The skin is then prepared for camouflage. The surface of the under-eye area is carefully cleansed and gently refined, and a topical numbing product may be used where appropriate. Before tattooing begins, the treatment area is mapped to define exactly where the camouflage correction is needed.
The pigment is placed very superficially into the skin using a precise cosmetic tattoo technique. Because the under-eye area is delicate, the procedure is performed slowly and conservatively. The aim is to create a soft veil of colour and build a natural-looking result gradually, rather than over-correct the area in one session.
After the procedure, the skin may appear slightly red, puffy or irritated, similar to the temporary skin response seen after microneedling or microdermabrasion. This usually settles within 1 to 3 days, depending on your skin type and sensitivity. Bruising is uncommon, but individual healing responses can vary.
Why multiple sessions may be needed
Dark circle camouflage is a gradual process. Most clients require a course of 2 to 4 treatments to build a soft, even and natural-looking brightening effect under the eyes.
The number of sessions depends on the depth and colour of the dark circles, skin response, pigment retention and the desired level of correction. Some clients notice visible softening after the first session, while others need several treatments to achieve a smoother and more even result.
The interval between sessions is very important. Treatments are usually spaced 2 to 3 months apart to allow the skin to fully heal, the colour to settle and the next layer of pigment to be placed at the right time.
Camouflage works by gradually building a very soft veil of pigment within the skin. Layering the pigment carefully, session by session, helps create a subtle lightening effect that looks natural and can last for a few years.
If the gap between sessions is too long, the previous pigment layer may fade, soften or settle too much before the next treatment. In this case, more sessions may be required to achieve the same level of correction.
Most clients should expect a subtle, natural improvement rather than a dramatic overnight change.
Healing and results
After the procedure, the treated skin may feel slightly irritated and may appear red or mildly puffy. This is a normal temporary skin response, similar to the reaction after light microneedling or microdermabrasion.
Redness and swelling usually begin to settle within the first few hours and typically resolve fully within 1 to 3 days, depending on individual skin sensitivity.
During the first 3 days, it is important to keep the area cool. Use a clean ice cube or cold compress to gently glide over the eyelid and under-eye area once, then carefully blot the skin dry with a clean tissue. Repeat this 5 to 7 times per day for the first 3 days after treatment.
No cream or ointment is required during this initial healing period unless specifically advised. The treated area should be kept clean, cool and free from makeup, skincare actives and unnecessary products.
Immediately after the procedure, the camouflage pigment is usually not visible as a final colour result. At this stage, the treated area mainly shows a temporary skin reaction, such as mild redness, slight swelling or irritation.
This is a normal response after working on delicate under-eye skin. Redness and puffiness usually start to settle within the first few hours and typically resolve within 1 to 3 days, depending on your skin sensitivity.
The true result is not immediate. The camouflage effect develops gradually as the skin heals and the pigment settles within the skin. Initial improvement is usually assessed around 4–6 weeks after treatment. The healed result should look soft, natural and undetectable, with the under-eye area appearing more even and less contrasted.
How long does it last?
Results typically last around 1 to 3 years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, skincare routine, metabolism and pigment retention.
Because this is a semi-permanent treatment, the pigment is designed to gradually soften and fade over time. A maintenance session may be recommended when the result becomes softer.
In under-eye camouflage, the carefully selected pigment helps create a soft light-reflecting effect within the skin, visually reducing the contrast of blue, purple, grey or brown tones. Some camouflage pigments may contain titanium dioxide, which contributes to opacity and brightness in the pigment blend.
Please note that camouflage tattooing is not a sunscreen treatment and does not replace SPF. The under-eye area remains delicate and should always be protected from UV exposure to help maintain healthy skin and support long-lasting results.
Aftercare
Aftercare is simple, but it is important to follow the instructions carefully to support clean healing and a soft, even healed result.
For the first 3 days, keep the treated area cool. Use a clean ice cube or cold compress to gently glide over the eyelid and under-eye area several times per day, then carefully blot the skin dry with a clean tissue. The skin should be cooled gently, not rubbed or pressed.
No makeup should be applied around the eye area for 2 weeks. This includes concealer, foundation, powder, tinted eye products, eyeliner and mascara close to the treated area.
During the healing period, avoid swimming pools, saunas, spas, sunbeds, heavy sweating, direct sun exposure, exfoliation, active skincare and unnecessary products around the treated area.
Laser, IPL and resurfacing treatments are not recommended over or close to the treated under-eye area, as they may change the tone of the camouflage pigment or remove pigment from the skin. Always inform your skin therapist, laser technician or medical practitioner about your camouflage tattoo before having any advanced treatments around the eyes.
Safety and pigment
For dark circles camouflage tattooing, I use professional cosmetic tattoo pigments selected specifically for delicate cosmetic and medical tattoo procedures. Pigment choice is extremely important in this area, as the goal is to create a soft, natural-looking brightening effect rather than a heavy opaque cover.
Where applicable, the pigments used are EU REACH compliant, meaning they are manufactured in line with European restrictions for tattoo and permanent makeup pigments. These regulations are designed to reduce the presence of certain hazardous substances in tattoo and PMU products.
The pigments are cruelty-free and vegan, and are sourced from professional suppliers with appropriate product and batch documentation.
Every treatment is performed with strict hygiene protocols, sterile single-use needles, professional pigment handling and careful skin assessment.
Because the under-eye area is delicate and not every type of dark circle is suitable for camouflage tattooing, a consultation is required before proceeding.
Comfort / does it hurt?
Dark circles camouflage tattooing is generally not a painful procedure. Most clients find it very tolerable, and in many cases numbing is not required because the pigment is placed extremely superficially into the skin.
For additional comfort, a topical numbing product may be used if needed. The treatment is performed slowly and gently, with your comfort checked throughout the appointment due to the delicate nature of the under-eye area.
Preparation before appointment
Before your appointment:
Arrive without makeup around the eye area.
Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment.
Avoid strong active skincare around the eye area before your appointment unless advised otherwise.
Do not book this treatment immediately before an important event, holiday, sun exposure or swimming.
If you take medication, have skin conditions, eye conditions, allergies, or have had cosmetic injectables near the area, please mention this during consultation.
FAQ
Is dark circles camouflage tattooing the same as concealer?
Will it completely remove my dark circles?
Will it completely remove my dark circles?
No. Dark circles camouflage tattooing is designed to soften the appearance of dark under-eye circles, not erase them completely.
The pigment is placed very superficially into the skin, where it visually blends with your natural skin pigmentation. This can help brighten darker areas, soften blue, purple, grey or brown tones, and correct unwanted hues in the under-eye area.
However, this treatment does not work like concealer. Makeup sits on top of the skin and creates an opaque cover, while camouflage tattooing works within the skin to create a soft, natural-looking correction.
Realistic expectations are essential. The result should look subtle, natural and undetectable — a fresher, more even under-eye appearance rather than a completely covered or “made-up” effect.
Who is not suitable for this treatment?
Who is not suitable for this treatment?
This treatment may not be suitable if your under-eye darkness is mainly caused by puffiness, deep hollowness, eye bags, loose skin, active skin conditions, vascular issues, or strong structural shadows.
Dark circles camouflage tattooing is also not recommended for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI, especially for clients who are prone to hyperpigmentation after skin trauma, inflammation, acne, scratches, waxing, laser, or other skin treatments.
Darker and more reactive skin tones have a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and pigment-related complications, which means the treated area may become darker rather than lighter.
A consultation is required to assess your skin tone, skin history, under-eye darkness, healing response and whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
