Frequently Asked Qustions

Funding support available

In New Zealand, nipple prosthetics may be eligible under the Breast Prosthesis Subsidy for approved clients. This subsidy is available for people who have had a partial or full mastectomy, lumpectomy, reconstructive surgery, or who have congenital needs. Prosthetic nipples are included as an eligible item under the subsidy.

To apply, clients generally need to be a New Zealand citizen or ordinarily resident in New Zealand and have a current medical certificate from their GP or specialist, including their NHI number, confirming the need for breast prosthesis services.

The current subsidy amount is NZ$613.33 per breast over a 4-year period. In many cases, the claim can be submitted either by the client directly.

We are happy to provide an invoice and supporting information for your claim.

What to expect

This is a highly personalised service.

During your consultation we will discuss:

• desired shape and size

• colour matching

• placement and symmetry

• whether prosthetics will be used alone or combined with tattoo

Each piece is custom made and requires time for creation to ensure the most realistic result.

All appointments are private and carried out in a respectful, professional environment.

The process

On the day of your appointment, a mould will be taken of your breast to accurately replicate its shape and create the desired nipple prosthesis size. If only one prosthesis is required, it will be matched to the shape of the other breast. We will also discuss and document the desired shade of the areola and nipple, along with details such as the Montgomery glands and other natural features.

Please ensure the skin is prepared beforehand and that any hair around the nipple area is removed if present.

After the mould is taken, the prosthesis creation process begins and takes a few working days. A fitting appointment will then be scheduled, or the prosthesis can be sent by post.

How long does the prosthesis last?

The lifespan of the prosthesis depends on frequency of use and proper care. With daily wear, it typically lasts 6–8 months. With occasional use, it may last 1.5–2 years.

Care instructions:

Regular moisturising is essential to maintain the prosthesis. Apply a light layer of Vaseline, store it in its container, and keep it away from direct sunlight.
